now i have a hamster and she is goin to get a bought 8 inches and at first we were gonna put her in an aquarium because there is very poor ventaltion and no much room for toys and such.hamsters love to chew and with cages that are good that have huge metal gaps and it can cause bummblefoot.but we do have a 10 gallon aquarium but we found a cage topper with 3 floors which gives my hammy love of room for toys and such and so much ventilation!they are perfect for hammys becase the gaps r not big and there is lots of room and it give them great exercise.here is the link to the topper we bought my my baby oreo.

Id go with the hamster cage . Easier to clean , more air flow , because with no air flow it well get stinky . Plus its easier to pet them and they get fresh air .
You want there to be things for the hamster to chew on otherwise he'll chew on the adhesive on the aquarium, so you'll probably be better off going with the cage. They also make small animal cages with "petting zones" which make it really easy to grab the animal as well as see what they're doing throughout the entire cage. It all depends on what type of cage you get but the aquarium isn't a good idea.
I would go with cage, to help with the smell need air flow.

I always used aquariums, because they're MUCH easier to keep clean than the wire cages or the habitrail type things. The aquarium can just be dumped out, and washed easily in the sink or bathtub when it really gets filthy.
The ventilation is an issue, though. With an aquarium, you can NOT use cedar chips. Get pine, or something else that's unscented. Cedar, without ventilation, will eat up your little pet's sinuses.
You can get a wheel that will fit inside an aquarium. Also, you have to have a lid, because sometimes the little guys climb up the water bottle %26 get out, so be careful.
It depends on what kind of hamster you are thinking about getting, or what kind of hamster that you have!
If you have a dwarf hamster: I would go for the Aquarium. Dwarf hamsters like only one level in their cage. So, an Aquarium would be the best for a Dwarf Hamster.
Syrian, Teddy Bear, ect. hamsters: like cages with 2 levels or even more levels! So, a cage with 2 levels or more, would be best for any larger sized hamsters (compared to the dwarf hamsters)!

Even though aquariums seem great, they aren't so great for hamsters. i suggest a cage with tubes and things. Even if you did put toys in the aquarium, I heard somewhere that hamsters and gerbils/etc dont like it. they like to have open, fresh air.
Cage. Aquariums provide poor ventilation and are VERY hard to clean. They are much more likely to be a breeding ground for bacteria and stink a lot more. Just remember how bad those pet smart aquariums smell with the rodents in them. Just be sure that when you get a cage. Dont get the kind with the wire floor. It hurts the rodents feet.
a crittertrail from petsmart they have many models to choose from. aquariums aren't well ventilated, and the urine builds up and turns into mold and bacteria.
