I want to purchase some rat diapers for my two male rats, for when I let them run loose in my room. I'm kinda tired of them urinating on my books lol. Any suggestions or help is appreciated!

i have only had female rats who still do the same but maybe not as much or as often?? they pretty much find their spots where they will do it %26 keep doing it. when you live with rats...especially those that are lucky enough to run around...you will have to live with stuff like autographs as i call them all over. they love to chew on your sheets, books, papers, etc. they like to steal anything small %26 bring it back to their home. i have found some of the funniest piles of my own stuff stolen by my rats - pack rats!
the most important thing is to remember it is a rat %26 that some are better than others, but you will get frustrated at rare times. it is these times you must remember never to get too mad at it or scare it or hurt it! it is just a rat, but to me they are as cool as little tiny puppy dogs. unfortunately mine have not lived longer than 2-3 years average. i do think some of it is that they have had such free roam of things that they chewed up many unexpected things that may have shortened their lives a tiny bit?
they do all this chewing because their teeth are constantly growing %26 they need to grind them down or they will end up with major problems believe it or not.
you will really have to 'rat proof' your room as i call it. you have to get your books up on shelves for example to get them off their level. you may have to store your stuff in boxes too.
when you do all this...maybe you can leave little old face towels or something in the corner or somewhere where they like to go. Mine have loved to pee on those %26 then i get to throw away the majority of pee in one shot. so use old t-shirts or towels you don't mind trashing after.
they are just marking their territory - your room - as theirs %26 like some dogs who pee on every tree, bush, fence, etc., they enjoy doing the same ;)
unfortunately, i don't know of diapers, but i think you could be on to something...but, i think you better make them chew proof.

Are rats as sensitive to t.v.'s, vacuums, and such?
I am going to still need to vacuum, and watch T.V. ,and listen to music, and normal teen/human stuff. So when I get some rats, I will need to know how sensitive they are to sounds. Will they become stressed and upset like other rodents, or will they be okay? Thanks.

i vacuum the room that i have my girls in everyday, they don't love it by any means but its done rather quickly. if i need to vacuum close to the cages, i just move them.
the television never bothered them as far as i can tell. i'm sure extremely loud music would drive them mad... but these are all things that i don't do around my girls. i play music at a moderate level (i can't "blast" my music, my son hates it!)
its not the noise its the vibration thats the problem

Yes, they also eat: apples, peaches, tomatoes, carambolas, bananas, pineapples and mangos,blueberries, figs, grapes, strawberries, lichees, Surinam cherry, loquat, and dates.However, they cant digest fruit well, it is better to give them veggies instead. i had 4 rats...the one died mysteriously and then they ate her. apparently she was sick and they are now all sick with whatever she had. they have black fingernails...and redness under the eyes..they are all sneezing.
i'm assuming they are going to die...i'm not very happy about this but they've been getting worse over the past 2 days and are really skinny and sick and i don't know what to do...
should i be concerned about my own health or does some body know what's wrong?

What you need to do is to get your Other 3 fur-babies to the vet Now! They go down hill quickly and Will die if you don't get them help!
If you have an animal friend, he trusts you for his care.
He is domesticated. He is a pet.
He can't get medical care without you.
He may be in a lot of Pain!
You would want him to do the same for you if the roles were reversed.
Until you can get them to the Vet start trying to give them Pedialite. They have to be kept hydrated. If you can't get them this then watered down Gator-Aide might help. There are some herb teas that will help.
Please try to save your little Friends. They are sentient Beings. They are as intelligent as a 3 year old Child.

Yes and no, try not to get more then one at first or you'll have baby rabbits everywhere. Also get a rabbit cage and not another cage, this why thier droppings full to a removable tray and not stay and pile up where your rabbit sleep and hop.
I thought our rabbit was easy to take care of. We trained him to poop in a pan with kitty litter and cleaned it out once a week. We had a ramp that led to the floor from his cage so he could get out and play. We bought him good veggies and rolled oats that we supplemented the rabbit food with. He was our guard bunny - when something strange was going on outside at night he would thump and let us know there was a problem.
Not at all. They are very high maintenance.
My boyfriend and I "babysat" his sister's rabbit for about 6 months. You have to feed them EVERYDAY, they like to chew on things they shouldn't (even if you buy them things to chew on), they shed a lot, and they go to the bathroom a lot. If you potty train them to go in a litter box, they are easier to clean up after...but you have to do it often or it will get stinky.
If you don't mind a lot of maintaining, than go for it. But, if you are looking for a pet that's a little easier to take care of I wouldn't recommend a bunny even though they are really adorable!

Rabbits aren't easy, but they aren't hard to take care of. I have over 50 rabbits and don't consider them high maintence. You have to feed and water them daily, but don't give them lettuce or anything to green or it could give them diahrea. If you have a tray underneath them you should probably dump it at least once a week or before it gets to full, or if you have a hutch with no tray then you don't have to clean them out as often but you still have to clean them out enough to keep it from smelling or getting to dirty. I don't think there much more work then cats because you have to feed and water them daily and if their house cats you have to change the litter box too.
Rabbits make great pets, even if it's a little work, but their worth it all in the end!!

Opossums are the only marsupials (they carry their young in a pouch) found in the U.S. Their best defense is "playing possum" or pretending to be dead. However, when cornered, they can bite or attack. (If you get too close, they have a scarey sounding hiss). They do carry diseases, which are especially dangerous to horses. They can be a nuisance in the city because they like to get in trash cans and make a big mess. They are considered a pest in New Zealand because they do a lot of damage to their trees. Overall, however I wouldn't consider opossums to be dangerous.
Possums are a mixed bag. Generally not a harmful creature, but can deliver a nasty bite. Sad thing about it is, they are so dumb, they can forget they are biting you, so they won't let go. However, they only attack if they are absolutely threatened. Every possum I've ever met though hasn't been "evil", and actually pretty tame.
The cool thing is they can't HAVE rabies. Their body temperatures are too low. They can still carry it, but they can't HAVE it.

Possums are cool. We use to go to an old country church that was infested with them. If you come upon one it will first try to run, then stop and hiss, finally they play dead. The guys would just wait until they played dead then pick them up by the tail and take them to the woods behind the church and toss them into the brush. They actually hang from their tails from the rafters of sheds or tree branches. They love to raid garbage cans, so you have to keep them covered. If they get too frightened, they do die. And they don't carry rabies like skunks or raccoons, but they can bite. Amazing creatures. Nothing to be afraid of though. They don't attack and never bite as long as you don't handle them much.
If wild. My aunt has 2 of them. They are pretty neat!

They are not a dangerous animal, but if you handle them they can give you a very nasty bite which could get infected.The only harm they cause is they like to eat flowers, and fruit.They are also very territorial,If you have one in your yard, he will keep others away.Please do not remove them and take them to the bush, they die if moved from their home.

They can be a nuisance in the city because they like to get in trash cans and make a big mess. They are considered a pest in New Zealand because they do a lot of damage to their trees. Overall, however I wouldn't consider opossums to be dangerous.

Possums are cool. We use to go to an old country church that was infested with them. If you come upon one it will first try to run, then stop and hiss, finally they play dead. The guys would just wait until they played dead then pick them up by the tail and take them to the woods behind the church and toss them into the brush. They actually hang from their tails from the rafters of sheds or tree branches. They love to raid garbage cans, so you have to keep them covered. If they get too frightened, they do die. And they don't carry rabies like skunks or raccoons, but they can bite. Amazing creatures. Nothing to be afraid of though. They don't attack and never bite as long as you don't handle them much.
If wild. My aunt has 2 of them. They are pretty neat!

I am planning on getting a pair of gerbils this summer. I've been reading about them on the AGS website and I think that I'm ready to get a pair of females.
I really, really would like to get them from a breeder, but there aren't any breeders in my area (Kansas).
I think that I will have to get them from Petsmart, even though I hate to support big pet stores like that.
My question is this: I haven't been able to get to the petstore lately. Does anyone know if the gerbils that Petsmart carries are male, female, or both? Also--how much do they cost?

Well IDK bout the genders, but last time I checked they range from $40- $60. That was at a specialty pet store, so they might be cheaper at Petsmart.

A word of advice, dont waste time on a plastic cage like a habitrail or similar, gerbils are voracious chewers and will chew out of it in time. Your best bet is a plain either 10 gallon or 20 gallon long aquarium with a very secure metal mesh lid. I have known of gerbils to rub their noses raw in wire cages. Also stay far, far away from cedar shavings for their bedding, it can cause respiratory problems in them.
I had 5 gerbils that came from petsmart after a customer put a rat in with the gerbils and it bit off their tails, they have since changed the setup so that cant happen again. but the 5 females lived together in a large aquarium for a few years. they had a wire mesh wheel, to run in and a bell brand water bottle with a metal hanger. they never managed to chew through the bell bottle but they went through five or six regular water bottles before i finally figured it out.

Are petsmart adoption places good to get ginnie pigs from??
there is one less than 40 min away and iwas thinkin if they have ginnie's i would get them from there.but i dont wanna make my mom go all that way.does anyone have a clue?

Ok, I will explain the whole chain of things for everyone who wants to know how this works.
First a breeder (and we are talking about show breeders for this instance we will talk alittle bit about pet breeders in a min) sells their culls to a pet broker. When the animals leave the breeder (depending on who they are, they are generally very healthy as they have just been weaned from mom.) There is typically nothing wrong with these piggies, the breeder just doesn't think it is show quality or lets say good enough to win on the table at a show. The pet broker then usually holds the pigs in a big bin with other pigs until a pet smart or petco has room and then they are shipped to them. This is alot of stress for a baby to go through and the brokers main key is moving the stock, not the care of the babies, this is where disease happens. The other instance is pet breeders, whos only goal is to produce babies and make a couple bucks a piece for them. I visited a pet breeder in Salem the other day and the conditions were deplorable! Some of the breeders where missing eyes and ears but still producing babies. They then sell to a pet broker and we are back there again. With this being said, I wouldn't buy a pig at any store!! I am sure I will get flamed for this, but if you are REALLY wanting a great quality healthy piggie, you should find a show breeder and purchase a wee one or a retired breeder from them, plus the cost is usually around $10 which is way cheaper than the $33 they charge here... They HAVE to take care of their piggies in order to win on the table, so they are usually feed the best quality food, and cared for very well, plus they are handled alot in most instances. This is the TRUTH!! The other GREAT alternative if you are uncomfortable with the show breeder thing is to find a great rescue who has their piggies vet check, and to ADOPT! Adoption fees are around $25 still cheaper than the pet stores.

PetSmart is a good place to get guinea pigs. They have all their animals checked by a vet and certify them. Plus PetSmart allows the Animal Shelters to hold adoptions for dogs and cats who would otherwise be put down. I bought a bird from PetSmart and they are very thorough in their care and feeding of their available pets. And they do have some really cute guinea pigs available. The people there are quite knowledgable about the animals and willing to assist you with any of your questions.
That's where I got my 2 guinea pigs, Bart and Mouse, from.
Bart's a very good guinea pig, but I think something might be wrong with Mouse's Eye or he might be sick. So it's a 50-50 chance of you getting a good one.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that. There's tons of animals there, just like petco up for adoption. I would say if you see one you like, go for it.
I have seen all sorts of animals go home there, and all of the people who adopted them seemed like great people.

I don't know about guinea pigs, but Petsmart in Lexington, KY is a wonderful animal place! I got two cats (humane soc. adoptions-Mickey %26 Malory) and my pet rat (a sweetheart named Miss Whiskers) there, and they were smart %26 healthy! Petsmart had gotten a bad rap lately from PETA, but my experience has been great! Their grooming is top notch, too-the only place I'll take my golden retriever (Goldilocks) after a terrible experience at another groomer. Good luck!

Please consider adopting a piggie or two from a local shelter or rescue. A reputable rescue will have already quarantined their pigs for illness or parasites and your chances of getting a healthy pig are superb. After months of complaining to their corporate offices, they finally reimbursed me for my vet bills. It's a sad reality, please don't support it!

well dont go to far .when you get your piggy you should put it in a cage at home as soon as possible and not handle them until next day.this way they don't get car sick and puke .so don't keep them in the car for over 15 minutes it is not good. go to petfinder.com and see if you can find a good pig.but i have had 12 pigs and 6 hamsters bought from stores and they are all fine.

HOWEVER, you MUST run a thorough check over all the animals in their cages(even ones you are not willing to purchase).
If even one animal does not look healthy, do not purchase any other small animals from the store.
When the assistant comes around to 'pack up' the animal, ask him to allow you to first hold the animal. This way, you can make a thorough check over him/her.
Also, if the assistant 'scoops' up the animal with a toy of some sort, instead of handling it, then odds are...the animal is not getting any physical contact at other times either. (You do not want to purchase)
As stated by another member above, you never know whether the pet will be healthy or not. It is a risk you take when purchasing a pet from Petsmart or Petco.
Try researching and see if there are any smaller pet stores in the area first, before settling for Petsmart.
Call ahead to any store and make sure they have the animal before travelling out 40 minutes and then finding out that they sold out.

Are pet rats nasty?

Pet rats are extremely intelligent, have super memories and are very loving and attached to their owners. They are also very social animals. Rats absolutely love water and they love taking little baths. They are very clean but they have a natural bodily scent. Rats are great as pets. By the way, which animal isn't dirty? Even a human baby is dirty because it's incapable of cleaning itself up. When you keep your rat and it's cage clean, then there's no problem.

I have rats and i love them. In fact i like them better than dogs or cats. I get them when they're young and wash them in the sink and blow dry them ( cover their ears) i have a little bristle brush and i use that too. I place my rats in a big fish tank. A wheel , a tunnel and water bottle the top is a wire one. Because they'll eat a plastic one. I take it with me everywhere in the house. I take them outside in the yard in the summer cause they need sunlight too. Watch for hawks. I remember when my two heard the hawk they came running for mine and my husbands feet lol. The only time they bite is if they're starved and smell food on your fingers. Sometimes they like might pinch your finger with their teeth but their really checking your fingers plus they might lick them for salt. I love them and have had them for about 4 yrs. I only get females because i have young children. The males can get big and other parts of them do too. You wouldn't want to hurt their backside.
My sister used to have a couple, they are okay but they smell really bad! Get a male because both times my sister bought females like a week later they had about 5 babies each.

Rats are some of the cleanest pets you can buy. As long as you keep their bedding fresh (don't use wood shavings, it is bad for them - try Carefresh paper bedding) they don't smell at all. They actually clean themselves dozens of times per day and are fastidious about keeping their fur clean. Not only that, but pet rats are adorable and loving and grow attached to their owners. I think your husband is confusing domesticated rats for wild rats, who can carry some diseases and infections. I whole-heartedly recommend a rat as a pet! Just be sure to buy them in same-sex pairs to keep them from getting bored and depressed.
Rats are NOT dirty! They are actually one of the cleanest rodents there is! They are far cleaner than my birds and even though I bath my dog, my rats are far cleaner by a long shot. They have almost no odour and as long as you keep their cage clean, they'll be one of the cleanest pets you could own.
Rats also have a great temperament. They are not "nasty" in any way, shape, or form. A well-bred rat can be your best friend and in some ways are even better than dogs.
Rats are just as intelligent as dogs are, and when it comes to some dogs, I think my rats are MORE intelligent! LOL! They can be trained to come when you call them, and can even do tricks. They learn their names and will react when you say it.
I think your husband simply doesn't like them for his own reasons. Remind him that you are NOT talking about getting a sewer or wild caught rat. You are interested in buying a domesticated well-bred rat from a professional breeder.
When I first met my husband, he saw my pet rats and was disgusted that I would keep rats inside the house when I have a 3 year old daughter. That was then. Now he absolutely adores them and sings their praises (sometimes literally) at work and to his buddies. His sons from a previous marriage each have their own rats at our home. They live with their mom during the week and stay with us on the weekends. My hubby has several rats of his own as well and quite proudly walks around carrying them and showing them off. His mom wasn't too impressed, but she's a wonderful and intelligent lady and while she isn't in favour of them for herself, she's certainly not opposed to her grandchildren having them. She even gives me "treats" to give to the rats! LOL!
I think if your husband actually lived with one, he'd come to love them as much as the rest of us rat-lovers do. Rats truly are one of the BEST pets for anyone.

I have rats and i love them. In fact i like them better than dogs or cats. I get them when they're young and wash them in the sink and blow dry them ( cover their ears) i have a little bristle brush and i use that too. I place my rats in a big fish tank. A wheel , a tunnel and water bottle the top is a wire one. Because they'll eat a plastic one. I take it with me everywhere in the house. I take them outside in the yard in the summer cause they need sunlight too. Watch for hawks. I remember when my two heard the hawk they came running for mine and my husbands feet lol. The only time they bite is if they're starved and smell food on your fingers. Sometimes they like might pinch your finger with their teeth but their really checking your fingers plus they might lick them for salt. I love them and have had them for about 4 yrs. I only get females because i have young children. The males can get big and other parts of them do too. You wouldn't want to hurt their backside.
My sister used to have a couple, they are okay but they smell really bad! Get a male because both times my sister bought females like a week later they had about 5 babies each.

Rats are some of the cleanest pets you can buy. As long as you keep their bedding fresh (don't use wood shavings, it is bad for them - try Carefresh paper bedding) they don't smell at all. They actually clean themselves dozens of times per day and are fastidious about keeping their fur clean. Not only that, but pet rats are adorable and loving and grow attached to their owners. I think your husband is confusing domesticated rats for wild rats, who can carry some diseases and infections. I whole-heartedly recommend a rat as a pet! Just be sure to buy them in same-sex pairs to keep them from getting bored and depressed.
Rats are NOT dirty! They are actually one of the cleanest rodents there is! They are far cleaner than my birds and even though I bath my dog, my rats are far cleaner by a long shot. They have almost no odour and as long as you keep their cage clean, they'll be one of the cleanest pets you could own.
Rats also have a great temperament. They are not "nasty" in any way, shape, or form. A well-bred rat can be your best friend and in some ways are even better than dogs.
Rats are just as intelligent as dogs are, and when it comes to some dogs, I think my rats are MORE intelligent! LOL! They can be trained to come when you call them, and can even do tricks. They learn their names and will react when you say it.
I think your husband simply doesn't like them for his own reasons. Remind him that you are NOT talking about getting a sewer or wild caught rat. You are interested in buying a domesticated well-bred rat from a professional breeder.
When I first met my husband, he saw my pet rats and was disgusted that I would keep rats inside the house when I have a 3 year old daughter. That was then. Now he absolutely adores them and sings their praises (sometimes literally) at work and to his buddies. His sons from a previous marriage each have their own rats at our home. They live with their mom during the week and stay with us on the weekends. My hubby has several rats of his own as well and quite proudly walks around carrying them and showing them off. His mom wasn't too impressed, but she's a wonderful and intelligent lady and while she isn't in favour of them for herself, she's certainly not opposed to her grandchildren having them. She even gives me "treats" to give to the rats! LOL!
I think if your husband actually lived with one, he'd come to love them as much as the rest of us rat-lovers do. Rats truly are one of the BEST pets for anyone.

Are Peruvians hardier than other guinea pigs?
I've raised guinea pigs for years, and out of all of the ones I've raised, the two that lived the longest were both Peruvians, at 8 and 9 years. All my other guinea pigs lived from 4 to 6 years.

I think that because long haired guinea pigs (like peruvians) need brushing everday things like lumps, parasites etc get noticed quicker and therefore get treated before it gets bad. Short haired guinea pigs do not need brushing every day and the majority of people only look for lumps, parasites etc once a week during the health check ups that you do from home. I know for sure that this is not the case with my 3 girls but I do know that it is the case with other families that I know that have guinea pigs. 8 and 9 years is very elderly, you must have given them heaps of care and attention.

Peruvians require more grooming, so they are thoroughly handled and examined more often so you would notice any oddities sooner. Unfortunately, a lot of guinea pig owners won't give the same kind of attention to short haired pigs.

They're a little thicker and provide more chewing resistance for the little guys. If you have a big enough enclosure and your 'sters are trim enough to go through them and not get stuck, putting a whole paper towel roll in their enclosure is good fun for them too. Just make sure your enclosure is big enough and won't get stuck against the edges and trap them inside. Like with anything you put in their enclosure, make sure it's safe to have it in there. Have fun!!

No, thats natural. They are grooming each other which is a sign of affection. If your hear squeaking when this happens, thats okay. Sometimes if a rat likes you, it will groom you as well.
if either of your rats starts avoiding the other one or you notice it is injured, then yeah they're fighting. we had no problem with 5 male rats in one cage together. then again, they were brothers...
they are not fighting at all, their grooming and that's totally different. what you're seeing is GOOD behavior in a rat!
you'd know if they were actually in a fight, they would be squeaking and biting and someone (err rat) would be injured. what their doing is what you wanna see when you do an introduction.

You'll have to scroll down a bit to get to it. Also read the section on quarantine %26 what to look for with regard to illness or parasites.

i had two male guinea pigs i brought them a year apart, but they started fighting, the fighting slowly got worse and in the end they had such a bad fight in the hall way that i had to put them in separate cages. personally i think the best time to have guinea pigs together is when they are brother or sisters. or they have a very large space to live so they can stay out of each others way.
They are not fighting. This is dominance. If they start teeth chattering, they will fight, though. There is a myth that males always fight, and it is untrue. They should do dominance outside of the cage where the territory is neutral. They aren't homo, either.

Are my guniea pigs a healthy weight?
I have two guinea pigs, Matilda and Penelope. I weighed and measured them last night. Here is their information:
Penelope: Age: 9 months, Length: 9 inches, Weight: 1.8 lbs
Matilda: Age 6 months, Length: 9 inches, Weight: 1.4 lbs
Both pigs are extremely social, alert, active and curious. Their fur is lush and shiny with clear eyes. They sneeze occasionally, but no discharge from their, mouths, noses, eyes, ears or anus. Penelope is very bulky and calm, Matilda is more squirrelly and although is the same length looks a ton smaller than Penelope. Both moves and sits comfortably and are both female.
Are their weights healthy for their behavior, body length, gender and age?

Yes. They are a healthy weight. Up to two pounds in my experience. THey also sound very healthy! Good job and they sound like they're well taken care of!

Ok, no these pigs are under weight, I am sorry to say. At three months old we would expect a properly taken care of piggie to be in the 22 ounces range which is about 1 lb 5 ounces. Your piggies should weight at least 32 ounces or 2 lbs minimum!! Anything less is a sign the pig is doesn't have adequate care or there is something wrong that is not allowing the pigs to gain sufficient weight. A good weight for and adult sow ranges between 32-40 ounces, and for a boar 38-45 ounces. And remember there are 16 ounces in a lb if you want to convert this. My suggestion is to take the piggies to the vet for a check up to make sure everything is fine. And you also need to take a look at the food you are feeding them. A quality food has at least (at least) these two components - 18% protein and no more than 2.5% fat. It should be made of a quality alfalfa pellet with out the treat stuff in there. Guinea pigs will pick through their garden variety pet store food and eat only the unhealthy items first leaving behind the nutritional pellets. If you are wanting to give them treats, you should be doing it in the form of fresh vegetables or dandilions. And if you know your food doesn't meet the critieria stated above you need to buy one that does and slowly switch over the course of a week. You do this buy mixing some of the new food with the old food each day. And each day when you mix it you put less of the old stuff in there on, day seven throw away the old food, it is junk!!

These vet reference books are from older sources, what is not being taken into consideration here is that many show breeders trying to reach the standard of perfection breed these piggies to have a large brick shaped robust body and the weight requirements have changed over the last 10 years.
I would say that they are a tiny bit underweight. An average adult (about 1 year old) female pig will be between 700- 900 grams (1.5 lbs- 1.9 lbs). Generally, you will see pigs over those normal weights, not under.
Since your pigs are not quite adults, they can be on the lower end of the range. The most important thing is that they have a healthy diet and are still putting on weight.

Guinea pigs will pick through their garden variety pet store food and eat only the unhealthy items first leaving behind the nutritional pellets. If you are wanting to give them treats, you should be doing it in the form of fresh vegetables or dandilions. And if you know your food doesn't meet the critieria stated above you need to buy one that does and slowly switch over the course of a week. You do this buy mixing some of the new food with the old food each day. And each day when you mix it you put less of the old stuff in there on, day seven throw away the old food, it is junk!!

These vet reference books are from older sources, what is not being taken into consideration here is that many show breeders trying to reach the standard of perfection breed these piggies to have a large brick shaped robust body and the weight requirements have changed over the last 10 years.
I would say that they are a tiny bit underweight. An average adult (about 1 year old) female pig will be between 700- 900 grams (1.5 lbs- 1.9 lbs). Generally, you will see pigs over those normal weights, not under.
Since your pigs are not quite adults, they can be on the lower end of the range. The most important thing is that they have a healthy diet and are still putting on weight.

your guinea pigs sound the right weight! mine are almost 2 years old, and weigh more, but they should because they are older. Like your piggy Penelope, one of mine named yogi is also very bulky and calm. Like Matilda, my other one named scampers is smaller looking. mine are both males. Yours sound very healthy to me!

Ok, I apologise for the title. I recently bought 2 male Guinea Pigs and both seem to like eachother. What was really weird was that whenever I open their little house ( lol they have a house in their MASSIVE cage) and one of my boars were on top of the other ( creepy huh!). I only recently read that 2 males would fight, but they seem to get along really well. I don't really know their history but I do know they probally met eachother when they were babies. Oh yes, both boars are 3 months old. Please help!

If you mean they are attempting to... how can I put this nicely.. mate with one another, it could be that one is attempting to show dominance over the other. It's very common in the animal kingdom to do that.

A play-fight usually seems much slower and calmer than a real fight and never usually lasts longer than four seconds. A real fight will often go on til one of them is dead, and of course you see a lot of blood. Not pretty.

they are brothers. and when i take them out to play one gets on its back and the other one hovers over the other and it looks like the one on top is trying to suffocate the bottom one like their kissing. they have been with each other since birth and they are 6 weeks old. are they fighting or playing??

Are My Gerbils Happy?
Here's the story: I have two Gerbils. I bought the first one not knowing much about them (the guy at the pet store told me they were pretty much like hamsters, WRONG!). After doing research and discovering they were social animals I bought another one and tried to do the split cage method to introduce them. It didn't work and they tried to kill each other, so now they live in separate cages. They both have wheels, chew toys, treats, houses, and coconuts to keep them occupied but I just feel like they are bored all the time! I get them out and interact with them several times a day and I set my bathtub up with toys and stuff to play with, but they want out after a few minutes. I just don't know what to do to keep them happy/occupied! Or is it just Gerbil nature? Any tips on how to keep them entertained? Sorry it's so long and I appreciate any help!

Gerbils are indeed social creatures but only with their FAMILY or others that they've known since they were babies. They will get along with other gerbils that they've grown up with, they NEED the company of other gerbils, but if you try to introduce 2 adult gerbils, they will fight to the death. Seriously. So next time, be SURE to buy two boys or two girls from the same litter or at least very young.
From what you tell us, it seems you are doing the very best you can, considering how that idiot at the pet store mislead you. Hopefully even though they can't live together, they can still communicate some and not be so lonely.
I think you can spend as much time with them as you want, the more the better. Gerbils are NOT nocturnal, they are what's called Crepuscular -- meaning more active at dawn and dusk.
I agree with all the others who recommend giving them cardboard. When I had gerbils everyone I knew saved their paper towel rolls for me! Gerbils LOVE them!!
Gerbils also LOVE TO DIG. In nature they live underground. So if you want to fill an aquarium with dirt and let them take turns, they might really enjoy this. They will get dirty though! I bet if you did some searching you could find directions on how to make a great digging place for them!

Give them brown toilet paper rolls (not bleached ones) to chew after the toilet paper is all used up. My late gerbil (Horhay the Herbil) LOVED to shred them. Just make sure there's no glue on it. You could also them unbleached napkins, paper towels, or paper towel rolls for them to chew up. It could keep them busy for hours!
Also, my gerbil loved this crinkly bedding- he would burrow in it with gerbil glee: http://www.fibercorellc.com/eco-bedding.
If you try this bedding, you might want to put a layer of more absorbent bedding/litter like Carefresh underneath.
As for snacks, gerbils go crazy for sunflower seeds but they aren't that healthy so only as an infrequent snack.
Small domestic rodents, like Gerbils,Hamsters,Mice, and Guinea Pigs are usually pretty happy with some paper-towel rolls, some tubes, and a wheel. Try giving them apples,carrots, and lettuce. And tomatoes, they love when you give them snacks an surprise them by hand-feeding them. It's good you let them out in your bathtub to run around, that will keep them happy. Lots of holding, try letting them climb up and down your staircase, my friend's Gerbils LOVE IT! My Hams do too, they get quite fast. So keep a close eye on them.

They are probably fine, although there really is no way to tell, a gerbil that takes a good run on its wheel should be pretty happy!

But, i do have one more suggestion...lots and lots of cardboard. Paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, cereal boxes, etc. They LOVE it. I also give mine all the junk mail. It gives them something to do and helps keep the teeth nice and trim.

If you leave their cages close to one another long enough for them to become used to the smell of one another, they should eventually grow to stand each other. The small patch on their stomachs is their scent gland. That is how they identify each other, by smell. They just have to get used to that before they are willing to be "friends".
So just keep their cages close at all times and keep trying to let let them play together until they finally stop fighting.

this is what i thought when i first got my 2 gerbils. i kept buying them more things to make them happier, until my mom said, enough!! but i learned, they are very capable at entertaining themselves! sounds like you provide them with tons of great things, i just can't sit in my bathtub with mine, bcuz there's not enough hours in the day! they also LOVE toilet paper tubes! it makes great bedding once they chew it up. i give my gerbils 2 everyday, and it keeps them busy for a long time. anything cardboard (cereal boxes, cardboard tubes, etc...) my family always gives to me, once its of no use anymore, lol.

If they are young they should be able to be paired up with a gerbil friend.
See if you can get a breeder at www.AGSgerbils.org to do the introduction for you; it can be tricky with some gerbils. They might like living near if not with the other gerbil, if you have to keep them alone.
Make sure they have 3 inches of litter to tunnel in and cardboard every day to gnaw (a paper towel roll or a small box).
The person who said gerbils are noctural is wrong about that; they are crescepular (nappers - who sleep most soundly at noon and midnight when it is very hot an very cold in their semi desert home country). If your gerbils are sleeping all day they could feel lonely or vulnerable. The free runs in the bathtub are a great idea though -- funning at top speed is often the lone gerbils antidepressant.

For toys for your ferrets, I have many suggestions.
Try using duct pipes (make sure they're clean) for your ferrets to crawl through. If you do not have any avalaible, you can buy them. Stores that sell building supplies would most likely have these in stock. Well, im gonna be gone for a whole entire week at my grandmas, which is 2 hours away from my hometown, and my gerbils have a glass aquarium and a small food dish and these HUGE food bars (which are just a bunch of food stuck together in the shape of a candy bar) and little letter chew blocks and i was wondering if they have enough food..because i usually have to refill thier food bowl over again but now they have big food bars...is that enough?

Two storey cages can be suitable but the maximum space must be acheived on the bottom level (as this is the space they should have for running round laps of the cage), and space on upper levels should be in addition to this. Guinea pigs don't climb so ramps must not be very steep and should have sides to prevent the guinea pig falling from an upper level.
[edit] Those cages you've added are far too small- if your mother isn't prepared to let you get a suitable cage then you really shouldn't be getting guinea pigs. You don't have to order a cage off the internet, the c%26c cages on guineapigcages.com are ones you build yourself- it's very easily to do, the materials are cheap and easy to get hold of, the cage can be made to fit your needs and will also be big enough for your new pets, unlike the pet shop cages you seem to be so keen on buying.

Your hamster has mites? They won't go onto humans, but it isn't suggested to hold that hamster while they have mites. Mites, while being very painful for the hamster, are caused by stress. He might be more susceptible to stress if he's out of his comfortable cage.
Please take him to the vet, because mites can eventually cause death if they aren't treated soon enough, and are painful for the hamster
Mites can be cured, they are like fleas. I don't think they get on you.
It's said that mites are not species specific, but that they're host specific. Meaning, they could cross species...but prefer their host and aren't likely to pack up and leave. You should be fine.
You should get the hamster treated, asap. I know some home treatments for mice and rats, but I'm unsure if they're safe for hamsters. It's always best to go to the vet anyhow...to be certain of what you're dealing with and it's the safest route in most cases.

Just one difference between mice and rats. Rats can all live together. Only female mice can live together male mice do not get along and have to live alone. I have all females, and I have noticed that the more I have he more often there are some that are active and it really is very entertaining to watch them. They are a lot smarter than I thought they would be, and my cat enjoys watching them too.

They have paired of in sets of "best friends." One of the four, Peanut Butter, is kinda skiddish, and Meredith will bring her treats into their igloo.
The other two, X. Spearmint and Trixie are always doing something. One day I picked up Spearmint and she wanted down and Trixie stopped building her house and came running to where my hand was making a sound more like a sad puppy than a mouse.
I've really enjoyed them and they are so funny. I am still trying to tame and litter box train them, but like I said I haven't had them for very long."
I gave up on litter box training them, as I just don't have the time or dedication to do it. They are very easy to care for, I have two water bottles and two food dishes, and I just change their cage every couple of days.

Yes that is okay! Guinea pigs poop all the time. So don't be worried if they are sick because it's just natural for them. My guinea pig pooped all the time too. It's just the way they are.

Are Jinga Blocks safe for my hamster to chew?
He chews his cage and I put a few Jinga Blocks in there, Thats safer then him chewing on his cage? I dont want to harm him or him harm himself by chewing on the cage. Jinga the game blocks

u can try leaving some of the toilet paper roll in the cage or some dried baked bread for gnawing or salt bar for hamster/ salt wheel. or some gnawing block.
try leaving one item at a time so tat your hamster got time to play with the item.
They are ok for him to chew on. But even in pet stores there are kinda like jinga blocks but they are flavored for the hamsters. My hamster would do the same thing I gave him one of those things from the pet shop, he liked it.

That seems fine to me. But, if your hamster is going to chew on wood, I would take the time to buy wood blocks at the pet store. Jinga blocks are most likely varnished with some kind of protective coating, and that could harm your hamster. Wood is good for a hamster to chew on, but I think something a little more animal safe would be more suitable.
I don't know about the jenga blocks but try cardboard tubes, or you can buy blocks of wood at the pet store that way you will know that they are safe.

They are all SYRIAN hamsters. Syrians have so many nicknames because they come in such a huge ammount of different colours and markings. Other nicknames are goldern/teddybear/blackbear ect ect..

Are holland loap dwarf bunnies good pets?

any rabbit makrs a good pet large or small. i breed mini lops, and they do make good pets. i also have breed dwarf lops and i do have one now. i have found they like lots of cuddles and like being brushed. but they can be bad tempered it you pick them up wrong or hurt them.
but saying that if you handle them right and give them lots of attention (which they love) you will be fine.
yes rabbits are good pets. please adopt one! they have dwarf bunnies needing homes at your local animal shelter..

My take is, pets are only as good as their owner. Do some research first and talk to a Vet who specializes in the animal you are wanting to get. Make sure you have the financial resources to provide the proper diet, health maintenance, and habitat for the animal, and the time to nurture the type of behaviour you want. And any animal you buy, take it to a vet within 48 hours to ensure that the animal is healthy with no defects and that it has been treated well.
A Holland Lop was the first animal I purposly bought as a baby and took in for my own personal pet. I rescued many animals but I wanted a "Baby" that I nurtured and knew would live for several years. Holland Lops are very intellegent, think two year old (both good AND Bad). Mine was box-trained, and would climb up in bed with me. Got jealous when I got a new boyfriend, wound up being banned from my bedroom when he peed on my bed and shreded my blanket after the b/f stayed the night the first time. I wound up marrying the guy who my bunny played games with =)
Great pet - he fell ill when we moved, and died at 9 years old. Avg life span is supposedly 6 years, but I've heard of up to 14 when fixed, boxed train, and taken outside. I used to take my bunny to parks - he came when called (usually - again, think toddler). He hated the car ride, but I usually walked and he was fine.
I now have two children, two and infant, so have not tried to get another bunny as my two year old takes up any time my infant doesn't! But in a few years, I will definately get another one, possibly adopt one as I know there is a need for adoptive bunny-moms and I've been told older bunnies are easier to box train than young ones.
From what I have heard they are fantastic pets. My cavvy savvy vet sells them, she also sells the smallest breed available, netherland dwarf rabbits. Rabbits do not like to be held as much as guinea pigs do so keep that in mind. Remember, just like guinea pigs, you need a bigger cage when you get another rabbit.
My Aunt breeds Hollands. They're very sweet bunnies and very funny to watch. I'd definitely reccommend them.
I've got a mini lop and he is the sweetest and most gentle rabbit. He follows me and my dog around and loves to be petted. He is my first rabbit, but I'm happy with my decision to take him from a moving family. We are in the process of litter training.

my old dwarf was MEAN.. but thats because of the home she lived in before me.. she would growl and attack you.. she got better though.. she got to the point where she would let you pick her up and pet her.. give her a bath and play with her big boyfriend (didnt do anything) lol.
but before you get a rabbit check its old family history.. see what it has gone through so you know what your next 8 years is going to be like! thats how old she was when she passed away.. now her bf is depressed :[
Are hedghogs baby porkupines?
my cousin and i are fighting on weather or not a hedghog is a baby porkupine or not.i thing its a totally diffrent speices but not my cousin of coarse.

Most people, actually are in fact allergic to hedghogs. I'm personally not, but my friends ENTIRE family is. Especially if you get stabbed by the little quills. Gives you hives in some cases.

even tho the hadgrhog has little fur some one could still be allergic to the dandgrif on there skin. some people are just allergic to any kind of aniamal.
There has been cases of people being allergic to hedgehogs. Although they have quills, they also have lots of underbelly hairs and skin flakes off their backs. Unfortunately, only way to tell is after you handle them.

There is no such thing as a living thing that is stupid. Everything that is alive have the necessary intelligence for surviving in its nature. A hamster may appear less intelligent next to a dog, but they are solitary animals that do not aim to please. The most common misconception is that because hamsters are so self-involved, they cannot be taught anything, and that's actually true! If you want somethign that you can interact with and even train, get a social animal (such as a mouse or rats). Hamsters are much rather enjoyed by people who don't expect "intelligent" things from them.
Most defintely not, unfortunely. My hamster is always figuring out new ways to escape his cage. At this point, it is duct taped shut and has a large dictionary on top to keep him from escaping..
Of course not!! My hamster Scratch can climb up the stairs in my house. My other hamster Minnie can ride the wheel when she's on the other side of it(like on the outside).
NO, to my surprise when I got a hamster I was surprised at how smart they were. My hamster loved to chase peoples feet. lol.
