Are hamsters nice to have?

I heard that hamsters arent so cuddly animals, so people told me to buy a guinea pig, so I have two piggies, but in that pet store there is a hamster that is soooo lonely. he is in that tiny cage already for few months in there.
so what hamsters eat? what they need? I heard that they sleep mostly, so can I have them sleeping in my lap? should I have her/him?
Answers:
Hamsters can be kinda cuddly. They're not like a cat or a dog cuddly, but if you spend a lot of time with them, tame them properlly and when you have them out of the cage, provide them with a friendly environment, they will start to look forward to being with you. I had a hamster years ago who would cuddle (in a hamster sort of way) when I brought her out of the cage. When I say cuddle, I mean perched up on my shoulder, or just sitting quietly on my arm. She would also zip around and try to escape if I forgot about her, so it wasn't like I could just forget about her.
Hamsters seem to sleep a lot because they are nochturnal. This is one of the areas where hamsters aren't always the perfect pet that the world would like to think they are. They're delicate little animals who's primary goal in life is to escape, and they are most active after the sun goes down.
Hamsters are very noisey, so if you would have the animal in your room, make sure that you can sleep through nightly knawing, running, chewing, etc etc. Hamsters need a good escape proof and safe cage, a wheel, food and a constant source of water. They need careful handling. And they need to live by themselves.
it depends on you..., if you want it or not..,if your industrious..
I have a hamster and I adore her! They do need care and love just like ANY animal. He/she would need a proper cage with a wheel for him to run in, proper hamster food, fresh water in proper water bottle daily...you need to clean the cage with mild soap and warm water once a week and change the bedding, he needs a run-about ball to run around the house in and you need to give him one on one time where you hold him and let him crawl on you and you pet him etc. They require lots of love and care but totally worth it! My hammie is awesome! If you don't take the hamster in the pet shop, let me know where it is, if it is close to me I will take the poor dear.
I was just like you, I walked into a pet shop, saw this fat furball in a little cage, fell in love with him, told my husband straight we were having him and took him home!
Yes, hamsters are wonderful pets. The larger breed, the syrian (also nicknamed teddybear, golden, blackbear to name a few) are the more sociable breed, that love human contact. The smaller breeds like the dwarfs are well known for being very unsociable and biting.
We have had Harry 15 months and he has never bitten us, and yes, he has curled up next to us on the sofa for a snooze on a few occasions!
Hamsters do sleep all day, and become more active at night. they enjoy to be taken out of their cage and put in an exercise ball to run around the house in. Also, bear in mind, that once hamsters reach adulthood (around 8 weeks) they become solitary animals and will kill another hamsters if housed together, so only ever buy one hamster.
My advice? Go to the pet store, buy the hamster you have fallen in love with, and give him a safe, happy content life with you.
oh their sooooo cute, the only downside is they die after 2 years. ive had many and they are easy to look after, all you need is a cage, water bottle, food bowl, the sawdust stuff, bedding, little house to put in the cage that the hamster sleeps in, hamster food and a few hamster toys. the food is like you buy bags of hamster food mix and you can give them UNsalted nuts and they like things like apples (nooooooo seeds). i used to give mine a little hug but they move around alot lol and are soooo fast, one second he is there, the next he isnt!!. they sleep during the day but you can get them used to waking up like 8pm but i heard you shouldtnt do that cause it shortens their life. but you wont regret getting one!! and you should get them at 10-12 weeks old or it might be too late to tame them, and once you do they will be used being handled and my first hamster used to fall asleep in my mums lap after he was done playing and got all tired...so cute! when you buy the hamster check that it is healthy (like alert and healthy fur and clean bright eyes), buy the hamster from a reputable pet shop and a book on hamsters. and yeah they do make alot of noise running on their wheel in their cage all night so put them in a quiet room also because they hear quite well and a lot of noise isnt good for them. Other than changing the food and water and cleaning the cage out once a week (and the bit that they wee in every day) and playing with the hamster, there isnt much too it. you might not want to go right in their and pick it up as soon as you bring it home, wait for it to get used to its cage first (a day or two) and then put your hand in and feed it something to get used to you, and then you can put your hand in and wait for it to go onto your hand and lift it out or take the roof of the top of the cage and pick him up ...gosh their so cute!!
some are nice then some are bitches lol what ever u do dont get a dwarf hamster ther mean and they bite if i was you i would get a teddy bear hamster there the best they dont bite some of them wean u first get thim they are a little mean cuzz thay dont no u but they will warm up to you a other type of hamster is all so nice is called a panda bear hamster thoes are the bigger onces but there really cute so there nice to have. Hamsters eat just regalar hamster food they also can eat vegetables and some type of frute like apple's hamsters are a very lade back pet they are nocturnal so they sleep at day and are awake at night but ther still up most of the time during the day. i dont think they can sleep on your lad but thers one more thing u need to no and that Hamsters are clever Escape artest make shoure the cage has no way for them to Escape becaue they will bush the dors to the gage to get out so make shoure there tite and wean your playing with thim dont take your eys off if it so yes Hamsters are really good pet's
Well, i own a hamster, Bino, and he's sorta cuddly. Most hamster's arent the sit on your lap, let you pet it kinda animal. They are noctornal, so if you dont like a lot of noise at night, i wouldnt suggest a hamster.
They need a cage that's big enough, yet the bars cant be too far apart or he'll escape and that's never good! They also need a lot of exersize. I have a hamster wheel in his cage and he also runs around my house in a hamster ball for a few hours a night. Also, they need a cleaned cage with fresh bedding. You can get bedding from your local pet store, or they do sell it in bigger bags at walmart. Cleaning is really simple. You change the bedding about 1-2 times a week. And about once a month you clean/wash the entire cage. Which normally, depending on size, takes about 15-20 minutes using soap and water.
Food is pretty simple. You can buy a food thats made just for them at pretty much any store that sells pet supplies. [ i prefer my local pet store, but i've seen hamster food at store like walmart and such. ] My hamster LOVES pieces of apple. It's a great snack and it's healthy for them. Just dont ever give him/her and food that has acid in it. it's very, very dangerous for them. They make "snack sticks" for them thats got seeds and such thats a good chew stick for when he chews on the cage, or anything, a lot.
Yes, they do sleep a lot, but only during the day. At night, they will run, chew, run, chew, and then maybe a power nap of like 10 minutes and then get up and do it all over again.
They really are cool animals and honestly, not that hard to take care of. [ But, this is coming from a person who owns 4 pets. 1 hamster, 1 frog, 1 cat, and 1 dog. ] I'd have to say, Bino [ hamster ] is probably the easiest pet i have to take care of.
So, in a way they are similar to the needs of a guinea pig. Just smaller and not as cuddly. Good luck and have fun! You can e-mail me with any more questions you might have on hamsters. :D
i have 4 hamsters and i am very happy with them.they take my stress away.they eat pellets, bird seeds, fresh fruits like carrots, apple, and bananas.they need a good place to live.a plastic cage would do.some use aquariums.they are nocturnal which means that they are awake at night.they are mostly asleep during the day.they love to play in wheels, tubes and a few mazes.it is not hard taking good care of them.just make sure that they get enough food, water and be sure that their cage is always clean.you could have them sleep in your lap if he/she is already comfortable with you.at first, hamsters are very shy and they tend to run away from you.so make sure that you try hard to make them at ease with you.whisper to them, and try to caress their backs so that they will know that they are taken good care of.try scrubbing your hands at their bedding so that they will recognize your smell.they have a very good sense of smell.and always play with them. i hope i helped you.
hamsters are not much trouble
ours sleep most of the day and are awake briefly a couple of times during the day to eat then get up about the time we go to bed to run in their wheels
they make noise at night so don't keep them in your bedroom or you will be awake all night
they eat hamster food and carrots
they need a cage and food bowl and water bottle and a wheel and an exercise ball is nice and then add an igloo or a paper towel tube or a box with one or two open sides and half of an old sock or a piece of old bath towel(for sleeping)
"(Golden hamsters) are... popular pets because they are easy to care for." -World Book-- hamster
Hope this helps a little!
i have a hamster named flipflop actually its my 6 yr olds. he is friendly. dont wake him up or he will bite. they dont need special care just change the bedding keep the food and water plentiful. they are nocturnal creatures so if u can put up with it spinning its wheel at night while u sleep then get one. some hamsters are nasty while others are as friendly as can be. the nasty ones are due to overbreeding. some pet stores have a guarantee if u dont like it u can bring it back. i went to petsmart and the first hamster we had was nasty it was a russian dwarf so i returned it and got flip flop hes a big hamster forgot what kind it is but my daughter can play with him. i suggest u take the hamster at the petstore and hold it for a while to see if its nice and then buy it.
A hamster needs a Cage (duh) and bedding and u can buy the food at the store or you can make a special treat like a bowl with some lettuce and carrots and sunflower seeds (or pumpkin seeds) an exercise wheel ( and maybe a tube..my hamster loves to go through the tubes) and i have a glass tank because my hamster always got out (so keep that in mind...they are very good at getting out of cages) and u have to clean the cage like every week...they need water the ones the suck out of and like a little playground or like a little igloo (that's what i have.and a ball they can roll in (make sure to take them outside some times) I hope I helped
they can cuddle once they are used to you! It doesn't matter whqat gender as long as the hamster is not really mean to you! You can get some hamster food at the pet store! I feed my hamster some fruit and veggies every day i feed him: apples ( no skin) grapes carrots and purple cabbage ( it helps prevent wet tail! They are nocturnal and they sleep during the day but my hamster gets up at 6:00 pm till 10:00 am! They are very sweet pets and are fun to have! I would do some research on hamsters! A really good site to go to is www.hamsterific.com If you have any hamster questions plz email me!

This Is probably enough but If you wanted me to go on I could go on for ever!
I love my 2 hamsters. One is a little brat and hisses at me, but when I pick her up she stops. But I like the little mean ones, she is just territorial. The other is a cutie, he is all white with black eyes and his name is Digger. I would not say they are cuddly per se but they do have their own personalities and I get a kick out of them. They are much easier to take care of compared to a guinea pig and you are not covered in hair when done playing. Its better to get them when they are younger that way they get used to being picked up easier. But it sounds like you act like me and if you see a little one all by itself you get it. Thats how I got a few of my hamsters.
you should get a hamster. all they need is food, which is already in a bag marked for hamsters, bedding; pine shavings or the fluffy stuff from carefresh, a water bottle and a cage. once you bring your hamster home, you need to have the cage already set up. put it in the cage gently and leave it alone for about 1 week. once it gets used to its surroundings, you can start to pet it and gently pick it up.watch out though because it has sharp teeth.talk to it softly and keep calling it it's name and eventually it'll know its name. hamsters are naturally nocturnal, but if you wake it up in the daytime and play with it, it'll learn to sleep at night and play with you in the day. i don't think that it'll actually sleep in your lap, but it might. if you need more information, go to www.hammysworld.wetpaint.com and it'll give you excellent information.
