Are guinea pigs stinky?

I want to get a guinea pig but heard they can get stinky. But I think they are so cute and I want one.
Answers:
Actually, guinea pigs (also known as cavies) have no natural odor. In other words, they do NOT stink.
However, if you do not clean their cages regularly (as in weekly or more) the CAGE will stink. Because the pig lives in the cage, his/her fur will pick up the smell of the dirty litter.
That means if you keep the cage clean, the pig will not smell.
Please read the following sites to familiarize yourself with the proper care, diet %26 housing of pigs before you get one.

Good luck!
Yea, they are stinky and a hassle to take care of. I personally would not recommend you getting one, but if you want to put in a LOT OF TIME and effort you should do it, but it's not worth it just b/c they are cute! TRUST ME
Yes, unfortunatlly, they get stinky. You need to clean there cage like every 2-3 days. Hope this helped!
Guinea pigs do not smell at all. If you smell anything from their cages, that means you are not doing a good job of cleaning their cage. Of course it is going to smell if the cage is drenched in urine! Larger cages don't need to be cleaned as often. www.guineapigcages.com shows you how to build huge cages that are easy to clean! Pet store cages are wayy to small. They are glorified litter boxes and need to be changed all the time.
I own 2 female piggies. They do not stink if you keep their cage clean. Spot cleaning every couple of days is recommended. And the entire cage should be cleaned once a week.
You are right; guinea pigs are cute and no they are not stinky, if you follow the following steps:
1. Get an hutch where the guinea pigs can get a continuous airflow but make sure that it is out of the way of drafts.
2. Place newspaper throughout the whole hutch, spread aspen or carefresh over the top of the newspaper (2-3 inches thick) and in the inclosed section have lots of hay. Why do it this way? Having newspaper on the bottom means that you can easily clean it by wrapping the whole thing up. Aspen or carefresh soaks up the urine which is what makes the guinea pigs smell (an unclean cage or a small cage which isn't cleaned often means that the urine builds up and makes the guinea pigs smell) and the hay is just for bedding and plus the guinea pigs LOVE it...
3. Clean out the hutch and replace the newspaper, aspen and hay on a regular basis - say every 3 to 5 days. You can use vinegar and a warm cloth to wipe out the hutch once you have emptied it of its contents.
4. Every 3 months (unless you are doing competitions with your guinea pig in which case you will need to wash him/her every month) wash your guinea pig. For this you need a clothes basket with holes which you place in a bath. You may need to put a towel on the bottom of this so that they can get grip. Place warm water (1-2inches high) on the bottom with a bit of washing up liquid. Gently wash your guinea pig, you can use a hard bristle brush if need be. REMEMBER: DO NOT wash guinea pigs for the fun of it, only do it if they are dirty or smelly and if it is because they are smelly than it means that you need to take better care of him/her.
5. Regularly change out food contents and water contents to prevent ants and other nasties.
Guinea pigs are gorgeous creatures, which with proper care will not smell, will interact with you and are fun and easy to care for. You can enjoy making tunnels for them out of pvc pipes and other obstacles.
Do make sure that you have researched and know just about EVERYTHING about guinea pigs before you buy them because they do live for a long time and do need a fair bit of care. They are very susceptible to diseases and health problems like heatstroke and scurvy.
Personally I think that guinea pigs rock!
they dont have a natural odor like ferrets.. and they DO NOT stink if you clean their cage weekly otherwise yes.. the CAGE can smell... but that has nothing to do with your pig.. just you having to clean the cage
good luck with your new pig.. i love them.. they are great =]
I don't think they are. When you clean out the cage there is a lot of poo, and it doesn't really stink at all. Believe me, Guinea Pigs are awesome!
They definitely aren't stinky!..at all!
If you clean the cage twice a week they won't smell. I have two guinea pigs in my bedroom and they don't pong whatsoever. Also a BIG cage will help, and a cage with good ventilation (plenty of gaps in the side). Males can smell a teensy bit more because of their sweat gland.. but this is only noticeable when you pick them up.. not when they are in the cage.
Ignore the guinea-haters who say they smell. I have experience, they obviously don't. People who say they do smell probably don't own one, hence why they don't care what they say about them.
Remember to get at least two - guinea pigs can't happily live alone!
