Start researching them on-line and in rat care books. Coming here was a good idea to. They rarely bite unless you have the smell of food on your hands or they are sick. My boys are extremely gentle. They do have nails that can be sharp but you will get used to the feeling of them eventually. Males are calmer than females are. Males are more content to cuddle up in a lap and females want to play more often.
rats make very good pets. they are extremely smart. all animals bite (even hamsters) at first until they get used to you. if you get your rat from a reputable breeder then you should be okay. they have claws but they're nothing like cats claws, and yes they are playful and trainable!
They can bite, and the bite is more severe than say a mouse or hamster, simply because they're bigger, but they're no more prone to biting than any other rodent.
Just keep in mind that rats can't really talk and most are actually lousy cooks!
rats can be wonderful pets. like any animal yes they can bite. they are wonderful little pets, very mischievious; yes they have claws. rats are very playful and also most love peanut butter - if you get a female rat you can get two and put in the same cage. go to a pet store and look at their rats and talk to their small animal person - they should be able to answer all your questions, and they'll prly be able to let you hold one of their rats and see what it's like. plus you get a good feel for what they need for their cage.
Glad someone liked the movie, I didn't think it was anywhere near Pixar's best.
Rats make for exceptional pets. We bought my daughter two rat sisters 2 years ago (rats like having a companion in their cage) You can see them here and learn more about them as well (scroll down to August 11th -- http://roundtablereviews.blogspot.com/20...
Templeton has since passed away, she died in June from cancer. Stormy, however, is still going strong. I wasn't sure how she would react to her sister's death, but she's been fine.
When buying a rat, I do suggest getting same sex siblings. Go to a local pet store, NOT A CHAIN, and specifically ask if the rats have been handled daily. If they've been handled, they won't bite. Stormy and Templeton have never bitten me, the only person they did bite was my nephew when he stuck his fingers in the cage and Stormy thought she was getting a treat. Even then, she backed off quickly and realized that she'd made a mistake.
I do suggest do not feed treats through the cage bars and then this biting incident wouldn't have happened. If a rat becomes accustomed to eating through the bars, they may accidentally mistake fingers for food.
Awesome movie!! Rats make fantastic pets. Males are more docile than females- they like to snuggle and be pet. Females wiggle more. They can be trained to use a litter box and ride on your shoulder. They're very smart and they do not bite! Yes, they have claws- they need them to grasp and hold on to things. If you have only one, you must spend time with it everyday (like an hour) or they will become too lonely. They are social animals. If you don't have the time, get two of the same sex- they can become friends. You must keep their cages clean so they don't become sick. Remember, rattoullie is just a movie.. your rat won't be cooking in the kitchen! But they make great little buddies. Good luck!!
Rats make very good pets and they bite if you mistreat them but otherwise they are great i would recommend getting one and they do have claws but they don't scratch unless you hold them in way they don't like it but you if you really wanted one you sound like you would take good care of it so i would really recommend getting one.
I absolutley ADORE rats! they make incredible pets. They dont bite (unless they're really scared), they do have sharp claws but believe me you get used to it! you must keep them together and you must be preapared for the HUGE cages they come with. and you must always keep them together bless them! i recommend buying a book and reading up about them first. i work in a pet place and you have no idea how many rats come into us in small cages and on there own! lol im sure you wont be one of those people but seriously you might want to look at rat cages and the price of everything. If you want any other information about rattys just email me at:

I'll be happy to help! :)
they are really good as pets, and they might bite a little at first if it is afraid of people. they do have tiny claws, but i have never heard of them scratching anyone. remember that taking care of them is the same as taking care of a hamster or mouse, and that it is sometimes a little more bothersome than you want it to be!
I went to the pet shop to get a hamster, they had just got rats in and the lady in the shop took one out and give it to my boyfriend (i was afaird of the tails) but this rat jumped on me and settled down in my hood-she chose me.
she makes a lovely pet and every time she is out of the cage she come to me and sits on my shoulder-she loves human company but think they need a friend as well.(we are looking for another rat as she was the last one left in the shop)
