Allergic reaction?

About 1 month ago, I used dog and cat shampoo on my guinea pig. My friend has 2 guinea pigs, and she used before, so I thought it was alright. After putting shampoo on my guinea pig, he started wheezing and sneezing until I rinsed the shampoo off and dried him. Did he have an allergic reaction? He's fine now, but I'm just wondering? And even though he's seems healthy and happy, is there still something wrong with him? (He eats and drinks normally) Someone PLEASE answer!

If your guinea pig had an allergic reaction to that shampoo, he would most likely be dead as their immune systems are not that strong.
The best explanation I can think of for this is the fact that he got wet which resulted in a body temperature drop, causing him to sneeze and wheeze, which is what anyone does as a natural reaction to keep the body warm; the same as shivering and getting goosebumps.
Once you got him dry and he got warmed up again, the problem resolved itself.
Hope this helps.
maybe he was allergic. Or he didn't like it
this probably didn't help
try unscented baby shampoo next time. an allergic reaction to shampoo would usually be hair loss and rash, but he may just have been allergic to the scent in the shampoo.
He may have had a reaction, but do they make shampoo for them??? You might check at Pets Mart and see what they recommend to shampoo with.
He may just not like to be wet. Really I don''t think you are supposed to bathe them as they can get the chills from being wet and cold and can develop a respitory infection and die. If you really need to clean him, go out and buy the wipes that are made for pets and wipe him down. If it were an allergic reaction, he would be itching and he would have irratated skin.
Well you should try buy shampoo at Petland!!
Hope I helped... plus your piggy would be losing hair
and would have a rash!
Well, that's a reason you shouldn't use any human(inclusing baby) or dog shampoo. The chemicals are just too strong. Always use small animal or kitten shampoo.
**The exception is Nizoral. It is a human medicated dandruff shampoo that can be used on fungal infections on guinea pigs. NOT on a normal basis
