A good rodent?

OK I've decided for a rodent. I might want a hamster! And can people tell me the prices and the best kinds? I heard the equipment and the pet itself adds up to around $100 which isn't too much. And what I have to do? Like how many times I have to clean it, what food, and what kind of environment it should be in. Thank you!
Answers:
Cleaning = Once a Week
Food = Well Balanced dry food and treats once a day (10% of thier diet) Treats such as Fruit, Sunflower seeds, Dry popcorn and ones bought at stores
Enviorment = Exersize Wheel for Night, Toys, Bedding on floor of cage, water "sipper" and any other things you might want to add (tunnels, ramps, etc.)
And That is prety much it
HAVE FUN WITH YOUR HAMSTER!!!
guinea pigs are good to. but a hampster is easier to take care of. i wouldnt know too much, but cages arnt too exspencive. you should probably not get a dwarf they bite a lot. hope this helps
Dennis Kusinich would be a good rodent for a pet. He only needs a little lettuce once in a while.
I have had rodents for over 20 years. I started out with hamsters and after getting tired of getting bitten the vets I worked for said to get rats. They told me that rats are much better than hamsters overall and they rarely ever bite. I switched to rats and have never been bitten (my husband has once but this was when she was very sick right before she died and he was kind of scared and took a long time to try and pick her up) I will never go back to hamsters again. With whatever you decide to go with do not get one of those plastic cages with all the tubes and everything. Something about the plastic makes it harmful to them. The vets I worked for said the best cage was a glass fish tank with a lid. You can check your paper for a cheap one or wait until their on sale. I got a tank for about $25 and they sell the lids at petco/petsmart for about $10 to $30 depending on the size of the tank. The lids are near the reptile section. You can also buy cage latches for about a dollar or two if you are worried about them getting out. Don't use wood chips or cedar as bedding this is bad for their their lungs use the recycleable bedding. Change it often and make sure food and water is given fresh. You can go to petco and they have sheets for free that tell you what to do and how to care for your new pet and even what type of temp. to be in. Whatever you do if you decide to get two make sure they are the same sex or you will have tons of babies throughout the years. Good luck.
I have 3 dwarf hams one just had 7 babies :D and 2 Syrian hams both are sweet. Syrians are a little more expensive then dwarfs and you can only have one per cage dwarf hams can be kept alone or with one or two others. My personal favorite are the dwarfs just because they are really fun to play with. I have one that will jump into my hand so i can take it out of it's cage. you can spend any where from 50 to 150 dollars on cage and accessories but 100 is probably right. i recommend a 10 gallon aquarium or a 20 gallon long aquarium just because they are easy to clean and it is easier to catch your pet. also you can give them more toys to play with and they have a lot of room. you probably need to change your cage atleast once a week For bedding it is best to get care fresh or kaytee total comfort and layer a few inches into the aquarium because they love to bury themselves and make underground tunnels. I also disagree with Vikki my hamsters have never bitten me occasionally they will nip but that is preventable by washing your hands before picking them up, (they easily think your hand is food if you've touched any) Hamsters make wonderful pets and even though rats are great in my opinion hamsters are amazing, cute, and cuddly, (my 2 Chinese dwarfs fall right asleep in my lap)

The hamster itself is usually around 4$. Cages can go anywhere from 20$ to 50$ and up.
You might be able to get a bundle deal with food, a water bottle, a wheel, and bedding for a cheap price--many pet stores offer this.
Food--regular hamster mix is fine, and the occasional piece of fruit or veggie will be appreciated.
Cleaning the cage--I'd say once or twice a week, depending on the size of the cage.
Environment--whatever you do, don't get cedar or pine bedding. Aspen, hemp, and Carefresh are great alternatives. Be sure to give your hamster a wheel and nesting box (this can be made from an empty Kleenex box cut in half, or you can buy one), and tubes to run through (I used toilet paper rolls when I had hamsters).
If you're considering getting any other kind of rodent, though, I'd suggest a rat. I've owned several hamsters in the past, Syrians and one Dwarf, and have owned 2 rats, and the rats have made much better pets than the hammies (not that I didn't love the hamsters, too, though).
I dont like hamsters, so i get rats and they are the best! smart, sweet, and non biting is the way to go! rats like to live in pairs so that'yll give you an excuse to get more than one, and i think they are the easiest rodents to care for if you want a caring, responsive pet... i think they are better companions than cats and some dogs!
yes a hamster is a good choice, the cage is $32-40, food $5, bedding $7, exercise ball $5 and a hamster $10-20. I go to petsmart for all my pet needs.
my hamster was $7
Im a guinea pig lover.my parents decided to get me 2 hampsters once for my birthday cuz they knew i loved rodents and they are so mean.one of them killed the other and the other one got out of its cage cuz it bit the latch off! guinea pigs are cheap to you can find them for like 5 dollars and hampsters are like 9...your better off with a guinea pig! hampsters bite to much...if you get a hampster...be prepared to have an evil pet!
