A question for all?

Why does everybody freak out when someone says they breed a certain animal or they want to. There is NOTHING wrong with that. As long as all the animals needs are being met then it is fine. Cant you guys understand that there are alot of animal lovers(like myself) that love a certain breed of animal? I love rats and I'm wanting to start breeding them. And all I get is rude people telling me I shouldnt. I am devoted to my animals and I would do everything to make them happy. I understand there are people out there that obviously dont care about there animals, their just doing it for the money. but honestly I could care less about the money. I just love watching little babies come out of their mother and grow each day. And soon find a great home. I always make sure they go to good homes. And I would take any of them back in a heart beat if the new owner could not take care of it. How come you guys cant understand how we animal lovers feel? I am a better owner then most.
Answers:
True animal lovers would not contribute to the overpopulation of small animals by breeding. YOU love rats, YOU love watching them being born... Sounds selfish to me. If you loved rats, you'd be adopting homeless ones in rescues or shelters, not bringing more in the mix.
To each there own.
I think its because there are so many unwanted and mistreated animals that are looking for a loving home. x
I think people, including myself, have issues with irresponsible breeders. The ones that keep breeding animals together that have genetic problems that keep on being passed from one generation to the next. Also, irresponsible breeding leads to over population in shelters because there arent enough people that want the puppies which leads to more and more dogs being put down.
I know how you feel.
I LOVE mice and rats and asked my parents if they can buy me one male and one female so I can start breeding them but they said no.
Almost everybody I know is freaked out by rats or mice.
But every animal is special in its own way!(even mice%26#92;rats)
People say this because there's too many animals in the world who r in danger or neglected. I also think there's a lot of stupid people on yahoo. U sound smarter than the people who r asking how to tell if a girl is in heat. Those people should not breed. I say go for it! U sound like a good breeder.
Just promise that once the demand for them dies, you don't continue to breed them so much that you can no longer take care of them.
Many irresponsible people are to blame for that. It's great that you want to do that, if you do it responsibly, which it sound like you will. Just do it! Forget about everybody else.
Good luck.
Irresponsible pet breeders give all breeders a bad name. There are good breeders out there who are very responsible about how often they breed, make sure they find GOOD homes for their babies, etc. The problem seems to be that, unfortunately, there are more of the irresponsible breeders out there, so finding a *good* breeder isn't exactly easy.
You have a big heart to love tiny creatures. All good breeders had to learn somewhere, they weren't born with their knowledge. Maybe some of these knowledgeable breeders of rats could give you guidance to help you with your endeavor. Best of luck, you sound wonderful!
I agree with you. Just because THEY have had bad experiences with breeing animals doesn't mean that YOU will. As long as you are sure that you can provide good, loving homes for them, breeding animals is not a bad thing. But there have been various pet owners that have experienced problems with helping the animals find a good home, and are worried that other animals will end up the same way.
If you want to breed rats, you should if you are able to give them all good care. And based on your profile information, it sounds like you are a good, loving pet owner. Your many pets must be lucky to have you. I'm sure a few more rats would not be too much of a load for you, and if you want to breed them, don't listen to what anybody else says.
Good Luck!
The only reason I would be against it is because there are so many animals out there who are in desperate need of a home, yet there are people senselessly breeding there animals, sometimes creating even more orphaned animals. Maybe not in your case, but in many.
I used to be the same kind of breeder, except I bred my rabbits for color patterns + not anything else. I also sold them to a petshop, I liked the staff but disliked the owner. He was selling animals for the money. Our bunnies were always accepted, we were told they were the most sociable + not run away scared like other breeders bunnies did. I thought i was being a good breeder. Well I did up to the point of where I took them. Yes the staff were well informed on rabbits so I felt good about that. But I had no control over who bought them.
Why am I telling you this ? Well just after I decided I didn't want to breed any more babies, I lost one of my rabbits so I went to the spca to adopt one. I ended up with 2 + I am positive that one of them was from one of my litters ! We always took pictures of all the babies before they went. This one had the same small dot on her back in same place, and the color pattern on her ears were similar to one of my breeding females. I was told the owner was good, but had to give up her 2 birds + 2 rabbits. Rabbits dont get to stay there for very long where I live. This is what I hoped never to see - 1 of my babies in the pound. My heart just broke. : (
not everyone feels the same way about animals as we do. Not everyone finds out more information about the pet they get. Not everyone takes their pets health into consideration (for ex. leaving your pet outside in hot sun.)
People who feel like you do, understand, its the others who dont understand. Be proud that you love your animals this much. But is breeding really the answer ? How about adopting an unwanted rat/animal at the spca + you will feel so much satisfaction in knowing that you saved him ! You could even provide a foster home for them.
People say not to breed because of all the unwanted/abused/neglected animals you see at the spca/pound. do you know how many dogs + cats are put down a yr because their time is up + no one wants them ?
I have more pleasure if rescuing an animal than breeding them. Maybe you would too. : )
I have to agree with Dark Girl. There are too many animals in the world already that are looking for homes. (I also believe in foster parenting and adoption because the same rule applies to actual human children.)
Please visit your local Humane Society online and search the rodent section. On the weekends people crowd the places but only to see cats and dogs. :( The last time I adopted a gerbil from them no one had even asked to *look at her* in the entire month she had been left there!
Her little wire cage was directly across from cats in cages and birds in open barred cages. Nice huh? To not only hear the sound of barking and yelping of lonely dogs all day, but because of lack of space at the shelter you have to live across from predators. She didn't even have a wheel for exercise! At the freakin Humane Society!
And not one person who works there really cares because you're just... a gerbil or a rat or a mouse or a hamster. If you think it's cute to have the babies, then adopt. If you're good at finding homes, then adopt. If you have the time or the space or the money, adopt.
They do things you can't - like threaten to sue if you breed the adopted animal or reposses it they suspect mistreatment or making unplanned visits. The documents people sign entitle the Humane Society to do that. You can't.
