Answers:
1) life span- Norway rats live to be about a year old- our beloved pet rat lives to be two to three years old, wild rat is flighty and survives by foraging for food in our homes. Our beloved pet rats come in a variety of colours and markings and are smaller in size than wild norway rats. Wild Norway rats have uncanny survival skills. Pet rats when "released" do not survive.
2)Rattus norvegicus
3)I'm guessing here-roof rats are we talking about the slaughter of, or acctually contracing the disease?
4)Beatrix Potter owned Sammy.
5)Autumn of 1901- no clue who showed what rats. I will look into it though.
6)Wistar rats
7) Debbie Ducommin (sp)?
8)To the best of my knowledge-? there are no separate breeds of rats, there are strains- there are no pure bred rats (to date)
9) I was doing research yesterday and acctually came accross this but do I remember it? hehe..Lets see if I can get my facts straight-
A true albino genetically has a lack of pigment. The pink eyed white is acctually a marked rat that has been selectively bred to show less color. The end result is a while generally show rat with pink eyes.(is that correct?)
I saw this on - http://www.afrma.org/pewrats.htm...
10)Cedar and Pine should never be used for rats as the phenols and acids can be toxic- causing severe lung damage-
cha- grow up things like this are meant for fun...
:O)
gees! i had 13 pet rats, i BREED them and i don't know this crap! READ A BOOK!!
Wow! I love rats and I still don't know any answers! You must be smart to know them all!
Whoa, I'm glad we're not getting graded on this! I thought I knew my little buds better. I'll give it my best try:
1. Rattus rattus is smaller, has relatively bigger ears?
2. Pretty sure Rattus norvegicus
3. I think this was Rattus rattus
4. Mark Twain? (wild-eyed guess, but I'd love to know the answer).
5. Sorry, can't even guess.
6. Is Sprig-Dauley a strain, or the name of the lab?
7. Debbie Ducommun
8. Not sure. I think all pet rats are the same breed unless dumbo, rex %26 hairless are considered distinct breeds
9. Pink-Eyed-White but don't know the difference
10. Cedar %26 pine can irritate their lungs
I am so sick of you preaching on about being a rat expert. No one in the fancy can stand you in the UK. Gawd, get over yourself. We are always learning, and growing when it comes to rats. People who have been in it a LOT longer than you know this.
Can you even stand up straight with the weight of your head??
Wow! Not a clue on most..
1) In wild form colour is different, honestly that's all I really know.
2) Rattus Norvegicus
3) It was Rattus Norvegicus who brought it into the country (well, their fleas)
7) the National Fancy Rat Society - I think..
8) Wild breeds? 3 or 4, I believe..
9) No idea
10) As above, cedar + pine.
Will be interested to know all these for definate.
Now that is quite the quiz ...
1. Size, natural habitats, and natural lifespans are in general some obvious differences
2. Rattus novegicus
3. Rattus rattus
4. Beatrix Potter
5. Mary Douglas at the Aylesbury (Buckinghamshire, England) Town Show on October 24, 1901 for the National Mouse Club %26lt;edit - it's good there are proof readers out there ... corrected the year.)
6. Harlan Sprague-Dawley (also a manufacturer of fine rat foods)
7. Hmmm ... if I had to pick one "published" "leading authority" I would likely lean towards Debbie "the Rat Lady" Ducommun of www.RatFanClub.org (although I personally do not agree with all her writings).
8. There are 56 species of Rattus currently recognized
9. Pink eyes versus Red eyes are one of the most obvious differences ... also, Albino infers a lack of pigment, therefore a "whiter" coloring to the fur as well.
10. Certain woods products (especially certain pine and cedar products) that contain phenols (an aromatic oil substance) that may create respiratory issues over a prolonged period of time in several species of small animals, not just rats!
OMG
not trying to be mean or anything but..
you have crossed the line about gloating over your *rat expertise*

Let's see how the DreamQuest Rattery does here hehe :)
1. What are 3 things that makes Rattus rattus different from Rattus norvegicus?
a) Size (Rattus Norvegicus is larger)
b) Diet (Rattus Norvegicus is more of an ominivore than Rattus rattus who is primarily an herbivore)
c) Lifespan (Rattus Norvegicus has an expected lifespan in the wild of 2 years to Rattus Rattus one year –or less)
-=and though I know you said three=-
d) Rearing of young (Rattus Norvegicus is more of a communal rearer than Rattus Rattus)
2. Our pet rats are descended from what species of rat?
Rattus Norvegicus
3. Which rat suffered in the plague along with cats, dogs, horses, and humans?
Rattus Rattus or black rat
4. What famous story teller was one of the first people to have a rat as a pet?
Beatrix Potter had a pet white rat named Sammy
5. Where was the first rat show held, along with the date, and who it was that showed their rat?
Mary Douglas showed her black and white hooded rat at the National Mouse club show in Aylesbury, October 24, 1901 (and won best in show)
6. Name a strain of lab rat?
Wistar
7. Who is "the world's leading authority" on pet rats?
This is a tough one as there are many experts out there on pet rats. I would hazard a guess of Debbie Ducommun? Is that who you were looking for?
8. How many different breeds of rats are there?
There are no breeds of rats. Many varieties, but no “breeds”
9. What is a PEW, and how does it differ from an Albino?
Perhaps that definition depends on the specific club whose standards you choose to go by *g*, but an albino IS a pink eyed white officially according to AFRMA and Rats Pac NW.
10. What beddings are not acceptable to be used for pet rats, and why?
Cedar shavings are the bar none worst choice for bedding because of the impact the phenols in the wood have on the respiratory system of rats. Pine is not much better for similar reasons. Care must be taken when using corncob litters as well, though they are generally accepted as a decent choice for rats, because they can mould easily which can also attribute to rat’s respiratory problems.
I confess, I had to look up the strains of rats :))
Getting in on this late, I was going to answer all if I could. Knew most-some of the answers but will just add a couple of things and confess the ones I didn't know. He he, it is for fun is all.

2. Norvvegicus.
3 rattus rattus
4 Beatrix Potter.
5. didn't know
